When a friend follows and supports your travel business but always chimes up that you should come and visit them because they live in Heaven on Earth, you listen. My friend from nearly 40 years ago made the courageous solo move to Puerto Rico a few years ago. Her invitation and the hopes of finding something that promised peace with the added benefit of breathing fresh air and listening to crashing waves did its trick!
I found the cheapest flight possible (thank you Southwest) – $200 roundtrip from CVG to SJU. Yes, there was a short layover at BWI – almost too short. 😅 It’s been a hot minute since I’ve flown SWA – trust me, I will not wait that long again. Thanks to my Frontier family connection, I can usually fly fairly afforadably, but Southwest felt bougie compared to Frontier. Bless their hearts.
The boarding is different with SWA, but absolutely genius in my opinion. There are no seat numbers, only boarding positions. The entire aircraft is open seating – first come, first serve. Don’t worry – if you MUST have a window or aisle seat, you can choose to upgrade for a small fee to insure you have priority seating. Yes, I did that only because I’m pretty certain I’m allergic to middle seats. (This has never been scientifically proven.)
Puerto Rican energy begins upon touchdown at SJU. Everyone claps – everyone! Where else have you landed and the plane erupts into applause? That was pretty awesome. The airport itself is full of MUSIC – and I’m here for it! The celebration of Puerto Rican culture is shown throughout the airport in murals, sculptures and music. Before you ask, yes, of course, Bad Bunny is everywhere – EVERYWHERE. And rightly so.
My stay on the first night was thanks to Marriott points. La Concha Resort in San Juan is where retro-chic meets Caribbean sunshine. Set right on Condado Beach, it’s got endless ocean views, stylish pools, and the perfect mix of laid-back vibes and lively nightlife. Think sunshine, salt air, and a touch of Puerto Rican glam—all just steps from the sand.
The service is top-notch – shout out to Christopher! He remembered my name the entire time I was there. Condado Beach is beautiful and worth a longer visit for sure. But on this first night after travel, I made the choice to just be still and enjoy the surroundings.
