If you know me well, you know that 80% of shows I consume are from the BBC, ITV, BritBox or Acorn. The real reason we end our adventure in Corfu? The Durrell Family.
The Durrells in Corfu is the delightful (and loosely true) story of a quirky British family who picks up and moves to the sun-drenched Greek island of Corfu in the 1930s—long before Instagram made it trendy. Led by Louisa Durrell, recently widowed, the family includes an aspiring writer (Larry), a passionate naturalist (young Gerald, who grows up to become Britain’s most revered zoologist), a gun-loving teenager (Lesley), and a hopeless romantic (Margo), all crammed into one wonderfully chaotic household. The family helped put Corfu on the literary and tourist map.
After taking advantage of the resort spa (thanks to Guest Experiences team), it was time to hop back in the tiny Kia Picanto and find a few of the filming locations featured in The Durrells in Corfu.
First stop was Danilia Village. Danilia village has played the backdrop to several movies; notably scenes from the James Bond film For Your Eyes Only, The Durrells, The Eye and My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3. This village was stunning. It’s uninhabited and now owned by a private company and operated as a venue and museum.
Next up was…a real challenge. Finding the Durrell house used in the series. Getting there was half the fun?! Let’s just say left turns on Corfu often turn into “Go 1.5 km then take the third exit at the roundabout.”
Eventually, we ended up at Kontokali Bay, trespassed on another resort, only for me to get a pretty blurry picture of the house. But…success…right?!
Dinner was at one of resort restaurants and was delicious. A game Amelia like to play is “Look, it’s almost…” Whenever we spy someone with even a passing resemblance to someone we know or a celebrity, it turns into, “Look, it’s almost Gary from White Lotus” or “Look, it’s almost Zach Goble.” It’s a fun game. We played it a lot on this trip.
